IT’S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, IT’S BRAIN SCIENCE
 
Presented by the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics
Session One

This session will explore lessons learned from the field of neurobiology research, specifically the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study, intergenerational trauma, toxic stress, and the implications this has for child cognitive development, including behavior and learning ability, and overall health and well-being across the lifespan.  

This session is part 1 of a 3 part series. The subsequent sessions include “The Cost of Caring: When Their Circumstances Become Your Stress,” and “You Don’t Have to be a Therapist to be Therapeutic.”

Tom Bradach joined the Illinois Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (ICAAP) in February 2015 as an intern for the Reach Out and Read—Illinois program and the Promoting Resiliency of Trauma Exposed Communities Together (PROTECT) initiative. After graduating from UIC with a dual degree in English and Philosophy, Tom joined ICAAP full time as a coordinator for ICAAP’s Child Development initiatives. He has provided training on trauma, toxic stress, self-care and other related topics both statewide and nationally to a wide array of service providers.

Ms. Brewster earned graduate degrees from Northwestern University (and Loyola University of Chicago, School of Law She has received fellowships from University of Illinois, School of Public Health Policy and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Strategic Communication).  Currently, Brewster is attaining her International Coaching Federation (ICF) credential.  

 
Throughout her nonprofit career, Ms. Brewster has advocated on behalf of vulnerable child and family populations. She is the mother of two and the grandmother of five, including a child with special health care and education needs.
