IDPH: Opioid Prescribing Resources

Attention Providers:

The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids and the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is asking for help in sharing a new educational resource for opioid prescribers in Illinois, developed by the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids with support from a grant from the FDA.  The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has posted the link below on its website on the Prescription Opioids and Heroin page under resources for Providers and Community Organizations.  IDPH would also like to share the following information from the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids.

Thank you.

As the opioid epidemic worsens, we know that prescribers have a critical role to play in reducing the prevalence of medication misuse and abuse, and in helping patients already struggling with dependence and addiction.
The Partnership’s “Search and Rescue” campaign connects prescribers (especially family physicians) with free resources that can help them identify at-risk patients in their practices, prescribe responsibly and refer patients who are misusing prescription opioids to evidence-based treatment.

This campaign has been developed and refined over the past four years with continuing input from prescribers across several areas of specialization, as well as addiction researchers and communications experts.

Our website – www.searchandrescueusa.org – contains background on the causes and effects of today’s opioid epidemic, and links to leading resources and tools, including:

-A link to each state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP);
--The Opioid Risk Tool, an evidence-based screener that can help identify at-risk patients;
--The CDC’s guidelines on prescribing opioids for chronic pain;
--Information on alternatives to opioids for management of chronic pain;
--Information on Medication Assisted Treatment;
--The SAMHSA Treatment Locator, listing accredited local treatment programs;
--Links to REMS-compliant Continuing Medical Education modules.

With FDA’s support, we are running a limited amount of paid digital advertising that reaches some of our target prescribers and connects them with the Search and Rescue website – but we are in real need of help from state health departments, state medical licensing boards and medical societies in getting the word about this resource out to family physicians across the country.

Might you be willing to help make Illinois prescribers, especially family physicians, aware of this resource through your own communications channels?  We, and our partners at FDA, would be very grateful.

I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about the campaign.  And of course I’d appreciate knowing about any efforts you’re willing to make to help us out.

Many thanks,
Sean Clarkin
